September 2008 SAM #31 Meeting

Harry Riser Assembly Focuses On a Classic

Indianapolis, Indiana

The Harry Riser Assembly has chosen The Classics in Magic as its theme for the year.  At our September meeting we focused on our first classic, and one of historyâ??s first documented  magic tricks, the Cups and Balls.  Each month we plan to spotlight a different classic effect and learn about its history and the multiple variations that have been developed over the years.

Chris Wilcox acted as host for the evening.  He began by sharing with us some amazing videos of several of the worldâ??s great magicians doing their version of the cups and balls.  First was a Dan Rider cups and balls cartoon.  Very funny!  The cartoon was followed by Ricky Jay presenting a cups and balls history lesson along with his version of the illusion.  We also had the opportunity  to see variations on the theme by  Dai Vernon, Penn and Teller, and Jason Latimer.  Jason Latimerâ??s clear cup routine was mind blowing!

Following the videos, Chris introduced Assembly 31 member, Taylor Martin, who demonstrated his cups and balls routine, which he learned from the Mark Wilson Complete Course in Magic.  Taylor included interesting conversation about a 1605 version of leather cups and balls (described in Hocus Pocus, Junior), the use of magnets in the cups and balls routine, and his Fatherâ??s chop cup.

As always, the highlight of the evening was when Harry Riser was introduced.   Harry shared a number of interesting stories relating to cups and balls and then showed us his version which he developed in conjunction with Charlie Miller.  He called his version the Bosco routine. As a bonus, Harry demonstrated, and then taught the members present, the famous walnut trick. We were all very impressed.

We then had the opportunity to tune up our cups and balls techniques by working  one on one with Taylor Martin and Harry Riser.

Next monthâ??s classic:  the Professorâ??s Nightmare.

Harry Riser Assembly Dabbles in Mentalism

Indianapolis, Indiana

Our July 2008 meeting included initiation of new officers, announcement of our theme for the coming year, some mentalism, and another amazing â??teach a trickâ?? compliments of Harry Riser.  The meeting was held at the home of our President, Steve Spence.

The officers for this year include three new facesâ??Chris Wilcox, Vice President, Dale Benson, Secretary, and Jay Newby, Treasurer.  Chris Wilcox owns Circle City Magic (an on-line magic store), Dale Benson is a retired physician executive, and Jay Newby is a logistics expert at the local Veterans Hospital.  Steve Spence, an attorney who specializes in mediation, was re-elected to his third term as President, and Don Miller, professional magician and owner of Family Time Entertainment, was re-elected as Sergeant at Arms.  Frank Dailey led the initiation ceremony.

President Spence announced that the Executive Committee has determined that our theme for this coming year will be â??The Classics in Magic.â??  Each month we will focus on a classic effect and learn about its history and the multiple variations that have been developed over the years.

The program for the evening was on the subject of mentalism.  Five of the members presented their favorite â??mind readingâ?? effect.  This was followed by viewing of excerpts from a Richard Osterlind Mind Mysteries DVD, including his â??Bank Nightâ?? and his â??Surrounded Slow Motion Center Tear.â??

As always, the highlight of the evening was when Harry Riser was introduced.  He demonstrated, and then taught the members present, the Shuffle Poker card illusion.  We were all very impressed.

IML: Indy Magic Lectures

IML Lecture Series

Greetings to all Magicians and magic aficionados,

S.A.M. Assembly 31 and I.B.M. Ring 10 is pleased to announce an exciting new opportunity.  We are launching Indy Magic Lectures.  I’d like to take this opportunity to answer a few questions that you may have about Indy Magic Lectures.

What is Indy Magic Lectures?
It is  a new organization dedicated to bringing the best in magic lectures to Central Indiana.  Assembly31 and Ring 10 will no longer book magic lectures.  Indy Magic Lectures (“IML”) will do  the booking for all future lectures beginning in August 2008.

What is the cost of joining IML and what are the requirements to join?
Any person 18 years of age or older and who pays the membership dues of $70.00 per year may become a full member of IML.  Associate memberships are available to all spouses of IML members, anyone under the age of 18 and to the parent of any IML associate member who pays annual dues of $30.00 per year.

Why should I join IML?  All IML members and associate members are guaranteed admission to at least 6 magic lectures each year at no additional charge!  In the past, 6 lectures would have cost you $90 if you were an IBM, SAM or FCM member.  This new flat rate “subscription series” structure will save you at least $20 per year.  That’s six lectures for less than the price of five lectures.  Additionally, beginning in August, the cost for attending the lecture if you are not a member of IML will increase to $25 per lecture (the price structure for spouses and children will remain the same for 2008-2009 as it is).  IML is an extremely economical way to see/learn quality magic.

Is there any benefit for joining IML early?  Definitely!  As an added bonus for joining IML by May 7, 2008 you will receive the following:

  1. Free admission to the Bob Sheets lecture on May 7, 2008 to be held at Wile Hall; and,
  2. A Certificate of Charter membership suitable for framing.

Anyone not joining IML by prior to the lecture on May 7 will pay the normal admission charge to hear, to learn and to be entertained Bob Sheets, named the “Best Lecturer of the Year” at the world famous Magic Castle in 2005.  Just think of it: Seven lectures for less than the price of Five!  You can’t beat it!!

Will this eliminate our local SAM and IBM and FCM groups?  No.  We want to keep strong, vibrant magic clubs.  For that reason, although it is not required that you belong to the local club to be a member of IML we have decided that if you live within Central Indiana (Marion, Morgan, Shelby, Hancock, Hamilton, Boone, Johnson, and Hendricks counties) that all IML members who do not belong to the local Assembly, Ring or FCM will be required to pay an additional $25.00 annual maintenance fee.  This is to encourage everyone to continue to join the local magic clubs (who still must pay for meeting space, etc.).  The clubs will continue to meet monthly and do all of the fun things that we presently do.

How do I join Indy Magic Lectures?  Send a check or pay cash to Assembly 31's treasurer, Joe Scott at 15160 Cherry Tree Rd., Noblesville, IN or bring payment to the Bob Sheets’ lecture on May 7.  Please make the checks payable to SAM 31 and write IML on the Memo line.

What if we don’t get enough interest in IML to make it viable?  If we do not obtain at least 30 members signed up by August 1 we will refund everyone’s money and Assembly 31 and Ring 10 will revert to the former method of booking lectures.  However we have no doubt that IML is a superior way of offering lectures and that we will get more than 30 charter members.

What if I have more questions?  Contact either Steve Spence, Jim Croop or Mike Engle

Holiday Dinner and Show - Dec 9, 2007

Special Events

Come one, come all to the annual S.A.M./I.B.M./F.C.M./S.Y.M. holiday gathering.    This year's event will be even bigger and better than usual.  This year's extravaganza is being held at the Murat Shrine located in downtown Indianapolis at 510 N. New Jersey St.  Instead of a pitch-in we are trying something a little fancier this year.  There will be a full, all-you-can-eat catered brunch beginning at 1:00 p.m.  The cost of the meal is $13.50 for each person 12 and older and only $5.00 for everyone under 12.  The feast will be truly wonderful for the entire family.  However, if you don't want to eat, feel free to come to the Holiday magic show which will follow the food at 2:00 p.m., downstairs in the Corinthian room.  The magic show is completely free and will feature a wide variety of top notch entertainers.  Please come, bring your family and friends.  This show is open to all who enjoy magic and being entertained.  You won't want to miss this truly magical event.

In order to properly anticipate the number who will be in attendance  we ask that you RSVP your attendance to either Steve Spence (722-0429) or Jim Croop (726-0811) and let us know how many will be in you party and also whether you will be attending both the brunch and the show or whether you will only be attending one or the other.  We'll see you there.

Jon Armstrong is more than just another â??card guyâ??. He was awarded the title of close-up magician of the year at the Magic Castle's recent award banquet in April 2007 (in addition to being one of the Magic Castle's most in demand performers). Last year he was featured on the cover of Genii magazine, and he just inked a deal with L&L publishing to produce a three volume DVD of his material.
